QUESTIONS

1. How do I apply?

  • Fill out and submit the initial application form. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.
  • If application period is no longer open if eligible you’ll be notified when applications for the next cohort opens.

2. Does this program have a cost for me?

  • No. The costs of the program are funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce, and you do not have to pay anything.
  • Participants will receive a stipend payment for participating.

3. How much will I be paid for participating?

  • $1600 total stipend, half at the midpoint and half at the end.

4. What is the time commitment?

  • 2 quarters. In-person classes meet 3 times a week for 2 hours/session. Ensure to make time for self-directed learning outside of class time.
  • Additional opportunities on the weekends or outside program hours for field work, hands-on training sessions, and additional study.

5. What is the schedule of classes?

  • Classes for our first cohort: Tues/Thurs 5-7 pm and Fri 9 am-12 pm.

6. Will I receive a certificate of completion?

  • Yes! This is not yet a formal technical certification recognized by employers, but it will still allow you to showcase your skills.

7. What are the opportunities for employment or further involvement after I complete the program?

  • Being part of the Community Network Movement.
  • Paid Internship program.
  • Network installer job opportunities with Tacoma Cooperative Network.
  • Further technician certification resources and community support.
  • Create your own opportunities via access to this community.

8. Are there any limitations on eligibility to participate?

  • Tacoma residents strongly preferred (though not required).

9. What equipment do I need to participate, and will it be provided?

  • A refurbished Linux laptop will be provided for the course.

10. If I’m interested but can’t participate in this cohort, will there be other opportunities in the future?

  • There will be multiple cohorts over the next two years.
  • However, some of these cohorts may be specialized, so you may not be eligible for every opportunity.

11. What careers would this program help me with?

Some examples include:

  • Community Organizers: YMCA, Tacoma Community Foundation, City of Tacoma
  • Network Engineers: T-Mobile, AT&T, Amazon, Verizon, Google, Local ISPs
  • AI Prompt Engineers: Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Educational Institutions
